2026-27 Staff Information Guide

As we look to the future, we do so with optimism, purpose, and a shared commitment to excellence. At Waverly, we believe growth happens when we work together — students, families, staff, and our entire community united around a common goal: helping every student reach their full potential.

We are moving forward in a new way, guided by purposeful growth, meaningful collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to integrity. Every decision we make is centered on what is best for our students and families because they need us — and they deserve our very best.

I am hopeful about what lies ahead. Together, we will continue to build a culture of trust, opportunity, and achievement where all students can learn, grow, and thrive. Thank you for your partnership and your belief in our schools as we work side by side to create an even brighter future for Waverly.

With gratitude and optimism,

Glenn Mitcham, Superintendent

All school employees in Michigan are considered mandated reporters under the Michigan Child Protection Law. This means any employee who has reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect must make an immediate report to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

Reports must be made immediately by phone to Centralized Intake at 855-444-3911 followed by a written report within 72 hours. Employees are not required to investigate or confirm abuse—only to report suspicions based on reasonable cause.

Notifying a supervisor or administrator does not fulfill the legal obligation to report. However, employees are encouraged to inform building administration after making the report in accordance with district procedures.

Michigan law provides immunity from civil or criminal liability for individuals who make reports in good faith. Failure to report suspected abuse or neglect, however, may result in legal penalties.

Protecting the safety and well-being of students is a shared responsibility, and all staff are expected to comply fully with mandated reporting requirements.

Employees are required to complete an annual online training on mandated reporter requirements.

FERPA stands for Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act.Please see BOE policy po8330 for further information.

Board Policy 1422 - Nondiscrimination, Equal Employment Opportunity and Anti-Harrassment

To summarize:

“Student records shall be available only to students and their parents, eligible students, and designated school officials who have a legitimate educational interest in the information, or to other individuals or organizations as permitted by law. The term "parents" includes legal guardians or other persons standing in loco parentis (such as a grandparent or stepparent with whom the child lives, or a person who is legally responsible for the welfare of the child). The term "eligible student" refers to a student who is eighteen (18) years of age or older or a student of any age who is enrolled in a postsecondary institution.”

Waverly Community Schools is committed to providing all students with equitable access to educational opportunities.
