School Safety
Waverly Community Schools is committed to providing safe, secure and supportive learning environments for all students and staff. School safety is a shared priority supported through proactive planning, strong procedures, staff training, secure facilities and partnerships with local law enforcement and community agencies.
The resources on this page provide information about the safety practices, emergency procedures and supports Waverly Community Schools has in place to help prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies across the district.
Safety Response Protocol
Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, and in accordance with Michigan state law, Waverly Community Schools will utilize the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) terminology for school emergencies.
Developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, the SRP uses clear, common language to explain five specific actions that can be taken during an emergency.
The shift to the SRP aligns the actions and language we use during emergencies with all other school districts in our state as well as law enforcement, making it easier for first responders to understand the type and status of the emergency, resulting in better communication and quicker action.
The five actions in the SRP are:
HOLD - In your room or area. Clear the halls.
During “hold”, clear the hallways and remain in the classroom or area until the “all clear” is announced, close and lock doors. Teaching and learning continue as usual.
SECURE - Get inside. Lock outside doors.
During “secure”, return to the inside of building, lock outside doors. Teaching and learning continue as usual, increase situational awareness.
LOCKDOWN – Locks, lights, out of sight.
During “lockdown” move away from sight, maintain silence, do not open the door, recover students from hallway, lock the classroom door, turn out the lights.
EVACUATE - (A location may be specified)
During “evacuate”, leave student belongings behind, bring phones if possible, students follow staff instructions for evacuation location.
SHELTER - Hazard and safety strategy.
During “shelter”, use appropriate safety strategy for the type of emergency and follow staff instructions.
During safety drills, Waverly Community Schools staff and students will use the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to practice what to do in a variety of emergency situations. Practicing each SRP action helps staff and students become familiar with procedures so they can respond quickly and confidently during an actual emergency.
Student and staff safety is our top priority. We encourage families to talk with their students about these terms and what to expect during safety drills and emergency situations.
Behavior Threat Assessment Team
Waverly Community Schools has established a Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) Team to help identify, assess and manage potential threats to school safety. BTAM is a prevention-focused process designed to identify individuals who may be on a pathway to violence and provide appropriate intervention and support.
The primary purpose of a threat assessment is to minimize the risk of targeted violence at school through a structured process for identifying, assessing and managing potential threats, as outlined by the National Threat Assessment Center.
Crisis Communication
Effective crisis communication helps keep our school community informed and safe during an emergency. Fowlerville Community Schools is committed to providing timely, accurate and clear information to students, families and staff as situations develop.
Depending on the situation, Fowlerville Community Schools may communicate with staff and families by email, phone and text. Information may also be shared on the district website or social media, based on the specific situation.
Families and staff can help ensure they receive important communications by keeping their current phone number and email address on file with the district.
